Ha Dong Chul

Painter. Professor at the Dept. of Western Painting, Seoul National University. Graduated from Dept. of Painting, College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University (1965), Graduate School of Fine Arts, Seoul National University (1969). Studied at the Graduate School, Tyler School of Fine Arts (1977, Fulbright scholarship) and graduated from the Department of Print, Tyler Graduate School of Fine Arts, Temple University (1979). Held many solo exhibitions in Korea and the USA. Awards include Prize of the Minister of Culture and Information in the Korea National Art Exhibition, etc. 빛은 …… 내게는 오히려 하나뿐인 현실이며, 나는 그로 인하여 나의 존재를 인식할 수 있게 된다. _하동철 '순도 높은 원색의 병치와 붓질의 속도에 의한 움직임 위에 수직, 수평 또는 사선을 추가하여 화면에 시각적 흔들림을 제시합니다.' 그것이 빛이라고 명명한 하동철에게 빛은 본질을 향한 여정이었다. 깊이도 부피도 무게도 그림자도 없는 평면의 회화가 뿜어내는 어슴프레하지만 존재감 있는 빛으로 구성된 매스(Mass)는 평면이 아닌 공간으로 확산된다. 하동철은 1961년 서울대학교 미술대학 회화과에 입학하여, 1969년 동 대학원을 졸업했다. 1977년 미국으로 건너가 템플대학교(Temple University)에서 판화를 전공했다. 1964년부터 1975년까지 《제13회~제24회 대한민국미술전람회(약칭 국전)》에서 특선을 6번 차지했으며, 1974년 《제23회 국전》에서는 서양화 비구상 부문에서 문화공보부장관상을 수상했다.
